For many years Baltimore has been called "The Monumental City." The best known, and tallest of Baltimore's monuments, is the one of George Washington, at Mt. Vernon Place. It was built between 1815-1829. The various inscriptions of important dates in George Washington's life were added to the monument in 1838.

| Editor's Note: As of 2008, it has now been 23 years
since I noticed the inaugural error on the monument; city officials have done nothing to correct the inscription. Also, some changes in my life since this article came out include: 1) My mother died in 1987. 2) I no longer live in the Mt. Vernon area, but in another Baltimore neighborhood. |
